GD Custom Furniture and Woodworking

A family owned company serving the Mid Atlantic region, including parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia.

While building and woodworking run in our family, we have taken different paths to wood working than our predecessors did. Our grandfathers were both builders and makers. One owned a construction company, while the other pursued woodworking as a hobby in addition to a career as a naval engineer. Our father passed on the building and do it yourself spirit. We spent time as kids learning how to build fences, sheds, and fix things around the house.

John Stuntz

I fell into woodworking unexpectedly after building a doll bed for our daughter. When I struggled with this basic project, I was determined to improve my knowledge and skills. This sparked a desire to create and build more challenging (and human sized) projects, and woodworking quickly became a hobby that consumed any free time I could find. I most enjoy working with hand tools and building indoor furniture and have recently begun learning the art of traditional wood carving. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a fully functional piece come together from raw stock and knowing that its success was a result of hard work and attention to detail.

Bob Stuntz

My first foray into woodworking was making a Christmas manger with my dad as a kid. Years later, I attempted to replicate a bigger version of that on the roof of my apartment in medical school (to a much less successful result at the time!). As an ER doctor, I dabbled in woodworking in my spare time as a hobby, starting out with outdoor projects including a chicken coop, a deck top herb garden, and raised bed planters. I have since expanded into fine woodworking and furniture. My favorite part about woodworking is coming up with a solution to meet the needs of a project.

What’s with the name?

GD Stands for “Garage Dwellers.” John and Bob both work out of their garages. One night, while asking us about our hobbies, our parents referred to us as “Garage Dwellers.” When we decided to start a business together, the name seemed to fit perfectly.
